The ASTI Smart Work Zone System is a real time information system that provides important traffic information to the traveling public with maximum efficiency. The mission of having the system in place is to offer the traveling public the ability to choose an alternate route, immediate notification of congested traffic ahead, prevention of rear end collisions/incident management, provide a safer working environment for the project personnel and also to simply offer the peace of mind to the motorists alerting them of the conditions ahead.

The system is comprised of several portable trailer mounted components that allow the system to be relocated as needed. As the project moves, the ASTI Smart Work Zone is easily moving with it, providing constant, real time, travel information. The components consist of a Queue trailer, Camera trailer, Variable Message Board trailer, CHIPS software and a project website. The website has two layers offering both a public page and the administration page which allows the DOT personnel to maintain control of the system while offering all pertinent information to the traveling public while it is occurring. The individual components are also equipped with GPS transponders that offer a constant tracking for all units in the field. The latitudes and longitudes provide an immediate overview of all units by placing them on a mapping system displaying their exact location at all times. All of the devices listed run on a battery management system that is being solar charged and regulated offering completely self sufficient devices and a totally stand alone system.

The system is able to collect speed, volume and occupancy data that is then processed within the ASTI software. Through complete automation the total system is able to update message boards prior to the work zone with messages that display travel time information through the work zone, conditions ahead, where to merge, which alternate route to take, or the DOT personnel can simply override the system with their own messages that are needed at that time.

The ASTI Smart Work Zone System can provide an overall safer work zone environment, expedite the project timeline, link to the existing DOT website and is fully customizable to achieve maximum productivity to both the state personnel and the traveling public.
